PICTURE A SCIENTIST
Documentary by Sharon Shattuck and Ian Cheney that chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists of diverse backgrounds.
Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

Visualizing the Discrimination and Harassment of Women in STEM
In 2018, the National Academies of Science, Medicine, & Engineering (NASEM) released a report on sexual harassment in STEM fields.
"The best estimates are that about 50% of women faculty and staff in academia experience sexual harassment—and those numbers have not really shifted over time," Wellesley College President Paula Johnson says. "Generally speaking," biological anthropologist Kathryn Clancy adds, "sexual forms of sexual harassment—like come-ons, unwanted sexual advances—those are actually the rarest forms of sexual harassment. Mostly you see putdowns."
Discover how the metaphor of an iceberg can help depict the various forms of sexual harassment affecting women in STEM.

Not the Science Type
This 2021 documentary film addresses negative stereotypes and the need for greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The film, produced by 3M in partnership with Generous Films and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), features four female scientists who challenge these stereotypes, confronting discrimination as they rise to prominence in their fields of science.
